Europe is taking a new step towards a more connected agricultural sector. The newly established European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Agri-Food (EDIC for Agri-Food) will support shared digital infrastructure and services, with Slovenia among its participating countries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For businesses developing sustainable food-production solutions, the initiative highlights the growing importance of combining physical infrastructure with digital capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting agricultural systems across Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital tools increasingly support agriculture, but many solutions remain fragmented across countries, organisations and platforms. EDIC for Agri-Food aims to address this challenge by connecting national initiatives and developing common capabilities that can work across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its priorities include trustworthy data exchange, interoperability between systems and practical services that reduce administrative burdens. The consortium\u2019s website also identifies AFDIS \u2014 AgriFood Data Infrastructure and Services \u2014 as the multi-country project supporting implementation through the development and testing of infrastructure, services and use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EDIC is a framework established under the EU\u2019s Digital Decade Policy Programme 2030. It enables participating countries to jointly develop infrastructure and deliver services through multi-country projects, providing a structure for long-term cooperation and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Farm ID: towards simpler administration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the consortium\u2019s first missions is to develop a common Digital Farm ID<\/strong>: a European identifier for farms that connects with existing national systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned identifier will fit within the wider European Digital Identity ecosystem. Its intended benefits include simpler reporting, reduced administrative burdens and more efficient exchanges across the agri-food chain. It could also facilitate secure access to high-quality data for services using artificial intelligence. These are development objectives, rather than benefits already available to every farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring artificial intelligence in agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consortium will also explore AI applications for agriculture, including risk management, product traceability and carbon certification mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the European Commission, the broader aim is to ease farmers\u2019 administrative workload, increase productivity and reduce production costs. The initiative therefore focuses on developing digital services that address practical needs across the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
